Holding Space | Hand-Built Ceramic Sculpture in Weathered Green Glaze
Holding Space is a hand-built ceramic sculpture from my Absence and Presence series, exploring the relationship between solid form and the quiet spaces held within it.
The piece balances a rounded, grounded form with a deep central opening that draws the eye inward. Rather than functioning as a vessel in a traditional sense, the opening becomes a place of pause—an interior space shaped as carefully as the outer form itself.
Layered glazes in charcoal, muted deep green, and soft mineral tones create a weathered surface that suggests stone, erosion, or the passage of time. Subtle variations and speckled textures give the sculpture depth and movement while maintaining a calm, contemplative presence.
Part of my ongoing sculptural Absence and Presence series, these pieces invite stillness and contemplation, asking the viewer to consider the space within as integral to the form itself. These vessels are shaped as much by what is missing as by what remains. Each form holds space — for breath, for memory, for what cannot be seen. The voids are intentional: an expression of the unseen forces that shape us.
Dimensions: 9.25 inches high x 5.5 wide x 4.25 deep
Material: Handbuilt stoneware with weathered green and gray glaze
